Happy Love Day!

According to Wikipedia Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened to Valentine's Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. To me this 'Holiday' is just a fun excuse to do something fun and exciting with the one you love. The truth is that flowers, chocolates, jewelry are special surprises that are sure to put a smile on a girls face but it does just that...puts a smile on our face. I hope that we learn to love our special someone everyday as if it were Valentine's day. No need to be extravagant or feel pressure to purchase something but rather make the person recognize just how much you love them and all that they have brought into your life. Everyday should be this special, do not wait express your love for these occassions.

"A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend, one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite of all our faults."
Charles Kingsley

Leo Tolstoy

"Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition."

I live for Music

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”

Friday

Since the day I heard this song I've been in love, no matter how many times I listen to it, I never get tired of how beautiful it is. Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson are some of my very favorite artists, their talent is so raw and beautiful and miles apart from many of the mainstream artists nowadays. The first video is how they collaborated to make this amazing song and the second video is the final version. Hope you fall in love as I did. This is my winter song to you.

Best of Beauty!

Hi Everyone! Today I'm going to write about some beauty products and supplements that I have researched and have found to be effective!! Take a look at the products that I've narrowed down to be the best of the best!

Hair
To improve hair and nail strength, luster and length try taking a Biotin supplement. Biotin is a water-soluble B-Complex Vitamin. Biotin is naturally produced by our bodies however, increasing the dose we naturally create stimulates the creation and growth of hair and new skin cells, making them healthier and more abundant. There are no adverse reactions from taking this supplement and often doctors recommend taking approximately 3 doses of 1000 mcg per day.

This supplement can be found at any local drug store or GNC.

Nioxin Hair Shampoo/Conditioner is a fabulous product that takes off environmental residue and DHT which is hormone that causes hair loss and thinning. The shampoo and conditioner add amino acids (proteins)to the hair follicle which strengthens the hair and gives the hair a nice healthy sheen.

This product can be found at Walgreen's, Target, Costco and Amazon Nails

As mentioned above, Biotin is used not only for hair strength but also for nail strength. In addition, Nailtiques Nail Protein polish is my favorite nail product which works to bond the nail layers creating a healthier, stronger nail.

This product can be found at many beauty and drug stores including CVS Priti Polish is a line of organic beauty products specializing in hands and feet. I LOVE their polish as it is gentle, glossy, chip resistant and carries the most amazing colors. I also enjoy their soy polish remover. These products have been featured in all kinds of magazines lately and are especially well received amongst fashion designers during New York fashion week. Most models were sporting Priti Polish down the runway! The products are 100% Biodegradable, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.

These products can be found at select stores , their website or on Amazon

Lips
AmorePacific is my favorite lip moisturizer. For those who have dry cracked lips this lip balm replenishes and binds hydration to the lips for up to 8 hours.

This product can be found at Sephora
Philosophy Kiss Me Exfoliating Scrub is a gentle scrub for dry, flaky lips leaving the lips softer and smoother! I use this scrub a couple times a week to add hydration for an easier application of lipstick.

This product can be found at Sephora and at Philosophy website.

Face
Above any products we can use proper diet and hydration is our best tools for getting healthy skin. Remember to eat healthy balanced meals and drink at least 64 oz of water per day. Oh and don't forget to clean your face before bed!! Sleeping with makeup on is a BIG no no!

I have tried a variety of facial cleansers from Philosophy, Clinique, Proactive, Bobbi Brown, etc and I have found nothing better than Clean and Clear Morning Burst Cleanser. It smells fantastic and it is a gentle cleanser than cleanses without drying out the skin. Alot of the other cleansers that Ive used either leave my skin flaky and dry or a bit too moisturized leading to break out.

You can find this product at any drug store.Dr. Patricia Wexler's dermatology line at Bath & Body Works is amazing! I have been using the skin brightening daily moisturizer with SPF 30 for several years now and I have noticed a huge change in my skin. I have less breakouts and my skin feels soft and hydrated but not overly moisturized or greasy. The SPF is especially important!Body

I've been using the same body scrub for the past 5 years. St. Ives Apricot Body Scrub, is effective in sloughing off dead skin leaving it soft and smoother and you cant beat the price! St. Ives Oatmeal & Shea Butter body soap is also one of my favorites.

These products can be found at any drug store and most grocery stores.

Dove Shea Butter Cream Oil is a wonderful yummy smelling moisturizer combining both Shea butter and skin nourishing oils. Believe me, you'll fall in love with this lotion. Hope you were able to get some inspiration for your next beauty purchases!

Need a Wellness Coach??

Hi Everyone!! Thank you so much for all your love and support, I feel completly blessed. Today I thought I'd try something new and share with you what I do in hopes someone would like to take advantage of my free offer!

As many of you know I am a Wellness Coach specializing in areas including Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Management and Tobacco Cessation. I have worked the last 4 years as a Health Coach and have found my true passion in helping others achieve a healthier lifestyle and ultimately live an improved quality of life. I've worked with kids as young as 6 to adults up to 92 and enjoy the challenge of guiding and supporting others to think outside the box and explore ideas that they may have never thought was possible. There is nothing better than seeing someone succeed in their goals and witnessing an increase in one's self-esteem.

With the New Year here of course this means that everyone has New Years resolutions and it means things get very busy for me because most resolutions involve losing weight, quitting smoking, and getting healthier. Fortunatly for me things will not become too chaotic until February so before the chaos I would like to offer anyone who is interested in having a couple coaching sessions to email me at lauren@triwellnesstoday.com. This will most likely be sessions over the phone or we could even communicate over skype, email or for those who live in SD we may be able to meet in person. I am working with a new company and have become the Lead Coach so, I've been building a Coaching Program for a few months and would like to practice a couple new techniques with a special someone who is interested. The sessions will be approx 30 minutes and Im willing to do 2 sessions and possibly more if my schedule permits in february.

I keep things very professional and fun while guiding and supporting you to achieve the goals you set for yourself. I look forward to hearing from you. Email me and the first person I hear from I will go ahead and take as my new Client! I can only take on 1 client right now but others who are interested I will let you know if I may be able to accomodate you:) thanks!!

Saturday

For those of my friends in Med School right now, God bless you! I've had some bad luck finding a doctor that I relate to and feel cares enough to actually spend more than 5 minutes nodding their head behind the computer. There is a lack of human connection and a lack of what a Doctor is intended to be there for; support, guidance, diagnosis and treatment. I ALWAYS leave the doctors office and think, "Wow, what a waste of time, I could have called my Mom and gotten the same answer with more compassion!!"

I know this is a generality and I'm am certain that there are many amazing doctors out there that don't fit this stereotype but talking among many of my friends and family we all feel the same way- the true compassion for one's wellbeing and feelings are overlooked amongst Doctor's nowadays.

I don't believe that Doctors are aware of how much 15 minutes of eye contact means when your not feeling well or your concerned about something. It doesn't take much to feel valued and when there is some compassion behind the quick shove out the door then your less inclined to think your hour and a half driving-sitting-waiting was completely meaningless. The question here is; are doctors too swamped to dedicate the necessary attention to their patients or do they have a tendency to feel that the more patients they can crame into their days the better?

Talking to my clients, many feel the same way, why go to the Doctors where they feel like one among millions and therefore, they forgo seeing the Doctor altogether. As we grow older it's crucial that our blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies, etc. are regularly administered to avoid future health complications. Avoiding the Doctor in turn leads to an increase in chronic disease which is an issue our country is facing more than ever.

A great example of this is when I went into the emergency room just a few months ago with a horrible migraine. After an hour waiting I was finally called back! hooray I thought, finally I get to see a doctor to help me with my pounding head... Nope, I waited yet another hour in the hospital room (which I hate to begin with) until someone came in briefly and asked what was wrong. They automatically intravenously gave me a migraine medication to relieve the pain. Within 5 minutes I was having severe side-effects, I couldn't lift my head and it was difficult to speak. I started freaking out naturally, it was the oddest feeling I've ever had and when my husband yelled out that I was having an allergic reaction it took nearly 20 minutes before someone even entered the room. Long story short, supposedly the nurse was instructed to give me the medication gradually throughout 15 minutes but instead she gave it to me all in about 10 seconds. Nice, right??

Where is the sense of urgency and where is the compassion?

Doctors have one of the most prestigious well-respected jobs in the world and I know the road to becoming a doctor isn't an easy one. Therefore, I do have respect for their practice but I hope for the well-being of our future that we acquire a younger generation of Doctor's who not only diagnose and treat but give the patients the attention and respect that they deserve.

Healthy Holidays!

Now, I'm not writing this post to be a Debbie Downer but rather just so that we keep our health and food consumption in mind over the Holidays. There are many contradictory studies that state the average weight gain during the Holiday's range from 1-7 lbs. Regardless, weight gain can and often does happen. As a Wellness Consultant I am constantly working with clients to avoid weight gain from occurring during the Holiday season and here are some popular tips I cover.

1. When at a Holiday gathering take a look at all the appetizers provided. Choose which one's look the best and you feel would be worth the calories. When people mindlessly keep grabbing from the appetizers they can eat as many as 800 calories even before dinner, dessert and drinks! If plates are provided place the chosen appetizers on the plate and don't go back for seconds. We have a tendency at parties to eat mindlessly while chatting so, by putting a certain amount of food on a plate we can help combat the never-ending chip and dip habit.

2. Cocktails come along with Holiday parties and I'd by lying if I said I didn't indulge. Go ahead and drink up but be conscious of the cocktails you choose. A lot of drinks that contain fruit juices or pre-made mixes are high in sugars and calories. If possible make yourself a vodka soda with a splash of cranberry juice for extra flavor or a Mojito if it's made naturally without the pre-made mix. Keep away from drinks such as eggnog, White Russians and Margaritas.

3. When eating your main course only place the amount that you intend to eat on your plate. We have a tendency to fill our plates which tricks the minds to think that we must finish it all. Instead place a moderate amount on your plate and you will be satisfied without that uncomfortably full feeling.

4. Now on to desserts, my favorite part. Again like the appetizers, scope out what kind of treats they are offering and decide for yourself which to splurge on. Instead of grabbing a little bit of everything, only choose the one thing that you feel you can't leave without and stick with that. This in turn may save you up to 500 calories!!

5. Exercise is crucial and something that often takes the back seat when life gets hectic. People are the most successful when they workout early in the morning before work because they are able to get the workout done leaving no excuses for the evening time. Treat your workouts as a work meeting or a doctors appointment that you must attend. You wouldn't just skip a doctors appointment or work meeting would you?

6. Drink water!! We drink coffee, we drink diet sodas and tea throughout the day but forget to drink our water. Caffeinated drinks act as diuretics which actually dehydrate the body leading to fatigue, loss of concentration, and headaches. For every caffeniated drink you have it is suggested to have an extra glass of water to make up for this. You should have approx. 64 oz of water/day however, for those who workout intensely or have a bigger build it is suggested to drink up to 80 oz.

7. Watch your stress. Stress levels seem to rise as the Holidays approach, from getting your shopping done to work deadlines we seem to be a bit more tense. When you feel your stress levels increase, take a 5-10 minute break and practice deep (diaphragmatic) breathing, or do something you know to be effective for you individually (listen to music, draw, write, call a friend, read, go for a walk).

Hope these tips help to ensure you have a fun and healthy Holiday season!

World Vision-The Ultimate Christmas Gift

As we start to brainstorm our wish lists for Christmas this year let's try something new! Instead of asking for that extra pair of shoes or iPhone that isn't really necessary, let's consider giving a gift to someone in need and really making a difference. World Vision is an amazing organization whose mission is to offer a variety of different ways to give to the less fortunate. You can sponsor a child, provide emergency aide, donate products among many other options. The website is very easy to use and there are so many different options to give that your sure to find something that you feel is important.
As I get older the "things" in my life become less significant and doing something that benefits others becomes more important. My family has donated the last few years to World Vision both sponsoring children and also donating money for water and sanitation, money for education, and even donating animals such as goats and chickens for food and for the ability for others to make money.
World Vision is a great way to give back and before you ask for items that aren't needed browse around the website and make this Christmas unique by giving the gift of help which will be guarenteed to warm your heart.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Being grateful means recognizing and appreciating all of the abundance in our lives. We acknowledge our means and give thanks for them. Living in a state of gratitude means not only acknowledging those material and tangible things, but also acknowledging the intangibles as well. Those are the things we most take for granted because we cannot readily see and touch them in our lives. It is not until tragedy strikes that we begin to really see those things that are unseen to the naked eye."

"When we live from that place of gratitude, then I can witness to the abundance in my life"

Being thankful opens us up to receiving all kinds of wonderful blessings. When in a state of gratefulness, we acknowledge our true selves & radiate this energy to others

Pet Names

You may be thinking that Ry and I are thinking about getting a pet and are searching for names. Well, you are wrong...I'm talking about the silly pet names that couples acquire throughout their relationship and Ry and I have many names we have picked up for one another.

When I hear other couples use pet names such as "pucker lips," and I can't help but turn my head and hide my face from laughing. But then I think, hey wait Ry and I have a billions obnoxious "pet names" for each other and we think they are cute. This got me thinking oh goodness, we must be that annoying couple that doesn't even realize that we are throwing around "Nuggle" or "Love Machine" in the grocery store while everyone rolls there eyes. We've actually gotten to the point that when I say "Ryan" or he says "Lauren" we both flinch as if we are in trouble. Instead we choose annoying names such as Nuggle, Skurmunchin, Scoundrel, Love Machine, Lovey among many more other unusual names.

Just thought this was rather interesting, I think couples get used to these names and they come to be second nature but to the outside world everyone is thinking "WHAT did they just call each other?"

I've learned my lesson that rather than judge others for their "silly" pet names I will embrace them because obviously theres a rather funny story behind it or just their own very unique term of endearment.

A Clean Sweep

The "cooler weather," has reminded me of a fresh start and an exciting year ahead. I will be the first to admit that although I may seem extremely organized I am a sentimental keeper. I hold onto things "I think" will come back in fashion or things I believe will mean so much to me in the future but in reality deep down inside I know that much of what I treasure is a waste of space. This Fall I am committed to clearing our place of clothes I haven't worn for a year, old sentimental sorority items, and old College "stuff"that I want so bad to get rid of but thought I would need it for some particular reason.
If this sounds like you; if your holding onto things from the past and you know that it's not adding anything to your life besides space, it's time to part ways. Much like a bad relationship. It's best to put it out of sight and out of mind because in reality it's not adding anything beneficial to your life and at some point in time you'll realize that it's only healthy to part ways.

These are 9 tips provided by TLC's Clean Sweep:

1.Start Slow.: It’s taken months for your house to become cluttered so it’s not realistic to try and organize everything in one day or even a weekend. Instead, start small – one room or section of a room at a time. Make a commitment every day to clean sweep another part of your home until it’s done.
Find a de-cluttering buddy.:

2. Invite an honest friend who will help you put things in perspective and help you part with that neon jumpsuit from 1982.

3. Hold a neighborhood garage sale!: Turn trash into cash by selling the items you no longer need in your home. Consider donating the funds to a local charity.
Use the ratio rule.: For every four items you keep throw away one. Challenge yourself and try to lower the ratio to three to one or if you are really brave, two to one.

4. Understand and honor your treasured collections: Items stored in a trash bag in the attic aren’t collections. If you truly treasure those items display them proudly and properly in your home, otherwise get rid of them.

5. Make your bed.: Your mother was right. Making your bed everyday is an instant quick fix that makes any room look neater.

6. Design a place for paperwork.: It’s one of the biggest clutter issues in the home. Have a filing center system for bills, important files and magazines. This cuts down on clutter being strewn around your home.

7. Try the clothes hanger trick: At the start of summer reverse the way your clothes are hung in your closet. When you wear and return an item, replace the hanger the correct way around. At the end of the summer you can clearly see what you haven’t worn and, most likely, what you can live without!

8. Organize your monthly receipts: Use an inexpensive 12-month accordion file to quickly and easily organize your monthly receipts and even paid bills. At the end of 12 months discard the oldest bills and receipts. This is a simple solution to that messy paperwork that can really get out of hand.

9.Understand that it’s not always about ‘the stuff’: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Recognize that the clutter is often a reflection of something deeper that might be troubling you. Dealing with the clutter can open up not only the physical space in your life, but also your emotional, psychological and spiritual space as well!

These tips were provided by Peter Walsh, an organizer on the hit TLC show "Clean Sweep. Walsh characterizes himself as part-contractor, part-therapist.

Find your Talent

I truly believe that every person in the world has a God given talent; a talent that He intends you to utilize to make the world a better place. It doesn't have to be an extravagant talent like being an Olympic athlete but it could be the gift of giving, being a great mentor, a great mother, singing, running, etc. You may still be searching for what you consider your true gift and don't be anxious about this. If you spend some time thinking about things that you enjoy and excel in, I guarantee you can pinpoint your talents. As you grow older these talents just continue to grow leading you to spread more and more joy to the people around you. You are an amazing person who possesses talents that God smiles upon.

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me.” -Erma Bombeck

"Love the way you lie"
I'd say that their talent is their beautiful singing voice!! WOW

I really enjoy Katy Perry, not so much her catchy pop songs but her deeper songs. She has a naturally beautiful singing voice. There are 3 songs that I adore, thinking of you,
Brick by Brick and Hackensack. She has a pretty amazing last name I must say:)

Eat, Pray, Love and ITALY!

I'm back from my amazing trip to Italy with Ry. We started our trip in Rome visiting the Colesium, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Vatican, we then headed to Florence where we hiked to the top of the Dome of Duomo, took pictures at the breathtaking Ponte Vecchio and Galleria dell' Academicia. From Florence we headed to Venice which was the most romantic city with brillant blue canals with boats and gondalas lined by beautifully intricate structures, we stopped to visit the leaning tower of Pisa and were spoiled with a luxurious hotel and great people, my personal favorite was our next couple days in Cinque Terra which is composed of 5 villages lining the Italian Riveria-Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Ry and I were able to hike and take the train to all 5 of the villages and stayed in Corniglia and Riomagiore which ended up being our favorites of the towns visited.Even thinking about the trip now makes me emotional because it was such a special trip. If you haven't visited Italy I can not stress enough how much you'll love it!!!! The scenery, the food, the fashion was so fantastic and the people of Italy were so friendly and loving.

Off to Italia

Ryan and I are off to Italy to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary!! What an incredible year it's been:) I arrive back in SD the 29th and will be sure to have many stories and pictures to share!!!!

Magical Moments

"You rose into my life like a promised sunrise, brightening my days with the light in your eyes. I’ve never been so strong. Now I’m where I belong." – Maya Angelou
There are few moments in your lifetime that you experience an out-of-body feeling; as if you need to pinch yourself because the moment far surpasses any expectations you ever felt were humanly possible. When I think of life and happiness I can say with certainty that I have never been as happy as I was on my wedding day. Of course I knew it would be a very special day, but it was so perfect that I can't imagine doing one thing differently.
I enjoyed every moment of my wedding but there are two moments that I will cherish as perhaps the happiest times of my life.
First, the moment I saw my Dad right before walking down the isle together at the ceremony. I was standing behind a sectional so that none of our guests could see me and when my Dad turned around we both started tearing up. I had kept my dress a secret so that my Dad could see me with the full bridal makeover and his expression was priceless. Daddy's little girl was all grown up and we both felt emotional yet I felt this overwhelming sense that it was exactly where I was meant to be, Ryan and I were certain we were meant for eachother and we had all our families love and support. The moment my Dad and I started getting emotional, my Dad turned around quickly and made a goofy face so that we could both laugh (saving my makeup job:)
The other moment that I honestly can't put into words to give it the justice it deserves is when I walked down the isle with my dad in hand looking at my soon-to-be husband. I honestly didn't know how Ryan was going to react seeing me, obviously I had hoped he would get emotional but, I didn't want to think he would react a certain way because I didn't want to get disappointed. Disappointed I was not!!Ryan's expression made me feel like the most beautiful bride in the world and I could tell he was overcome with emotion. It was a magical moment and his reaction was absolutley perfect. At the end of the reception, Ryan and I climbed in the limo to drive to the hotel and we immediately turned to eachother laughing saying "Wow, that literally was the best night ever!" We both knew it far exceeded our expectations and we both felt full of love seeing all the people that have been present in your life in one room. We felt so fortunate to have our families support so that we could create the wedding of our dreams.
I thought I would share a couple photos of Ryan's reaction as I walked down the isle! ahhhh LOVE IT!

Another amazing moment was the night that Ryan proposed to me. I was completely suprised, after a wonderful day and nice dinner we decided that we take a walk on the beach to see the beautiful sunset. Ryan had set up his camera on his tripod to take pictures of us (sounds strange but this isn't unusual for us:) and little did I know that he had it running the whole time while he proposed. I wish you could hear what we were saying in the video but to summarize it; he tells me that before we take pictures he has something for me, I opened the wrapped gift which was a framed letter that he wrote which was absolutely beautiful. After reading the letter he asked if I wanted any chocolates, I told him that I was too full from dinner and that we could eat them later on. He replied, "no, I REALLY think you'll like them," so I opened the chocolates and saw a jewlery box. I didn't want to overreact and assume it was a ring so, I opened it reluctantly and then that was when he dropped to his knee!! It was PERFECT:)

Home is where the heart is

The view from our balcony of the fire pit/ BBQ area
Ryan and I were given my parent's kitchen table which we stained
and painted the legs black for an updated look. I used a yellow shirt that I had never worn to make the pillow. I love the pleats on the pillow and it was free! How can you beat that??!!
I painted this...canvas, acryllic paint...cheap and fun!
I never thought we would have yellow in our room but it seemed to brighten up our black & white color scheme. The yellow makes the room feel like it's full of sunshine!Double sinks...heavenly! Our favorite color is blue! It's peaceful and reminds us of the ocean
Ryan and I just recently moved to another unit in the same complex and have spent our time recently redecorating the space to make it our own. We love the fact that the unit is right next to the amenities- the BBQ/fire pit area, pool, gym, etc. and even though moving was a huge pain, I'm beginning to think I enjoy the whole process of reorganizing and redecorating. It makes me excited to think of new color combinations and different arrangements with the furniture and because Ryan is an Engineer he seems to enjoy the process just as much as I do and we have found it to be something that we both are passionate about. Ryan and I had a blast painting and one of our favorite things about the new place is the fact that it's tucked away in the back of the complex so we are able to enjoy dinner sitting outside on our balcony which is something we werent able to do at our previous place because it was too noisy. Ryan built a table for our balcony and I'm really excited about spending our nights eating dinner overlooking the lighted firepit area! Above are some pics of our place so far:)

If Home is where the heart is
May your Home be blessed
A shelter from the storms of life
A place of rest,
And when each day is over
And toil put in it's place
Your Home's dear warmth
Will bring its smile
To light the saddest face.

A Celebration of Life After Cancer

It's been over 2 years since my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mom has always been my best friend so this news was incredibly devastating for me and my family. Immediately after being diagnosed my mom demonstrated what it means to be a courageous fighter and was truly inspiring throughout her intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments. I am pleased to announce that she is cancer-free and healthy as ever. God has blessed us with an amazing healthy mother and although this experience was devastating it is a true reminder of the fact that life is a precious gift that can be taken at any moment.
My mom found her best friend or "survivor sister" right after she was diagnosed with cancer. Sue Beasley was diagnosed with breast cancer the previous year and has been a true angel making it her goal to support my mom throughout her cancer journey. They had a common bond and found comfort in knowing that they both understood each other completely. I felt at ease knowing that Sue was there for my mom through everything as I felt helpless being so far away. Together, they find a way of finding laughter in even the most difficult times and their positive attitudes are contagious. Their humor, faith and bond of being survivor sisters is truly special and I'm sure they will be best of friends for many years to come. This past Saturday they took part in a 24 hour breast cancer walkathon. Here are a couple pictures of the adorable booth that they set up.
